Gaithersburg, Md. (December 9, 2015)  The Montgomery County Road Runners Club (MCRRC), one of the largest and most active running clubs in the country, recently became the first official supporter of La Milla de Mayo. The Club’s generous contribution, representing proceeds from MCRRC’s Parks Half Marathon, will allow for expanded participation in the race. “We are pleased to support La Milla de Mayo in its inaugural year,” said MCRRC President Don Shulman. “Our support will allow those who might not be able to afford the entry fee to participate in this new running event in Montgomery County.”

La Milla de Mayo is a one mile run/walk planned for Saturday, May 7, 2016. It features a chip timed race, multiple kids fun runs, and an expo with food and festivities. Designed to bring attention to the economic vitality of Olde Towne Gaithersburg and to engage residents in a fun, social fitness activity, La Milla de Mayo will start at the Girard Business Center and end at the Thomas Cannery Shopping Center along East Diamond Avenue. A post-race festival will take place at the Gaithersburg Community Museum Plaza.

“This event touches several important initiatives: encouraging fitness, bringing families and communities together, and exposing residents and visitors to the City’s historic center,” said Michele Potter, Director of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture. “We are so pleased that MCRRC is joining with us, lending not only their financial support but their expertise to craft a quality event for all participants.”

Customizable sponsorship packages are available ranging from $100 to $2,000, allowing businesses and organizations to display banners along the race course, place logos on t-shirts, serve as a pre-race packet pick-up location, provide promotional materials in race packets, and have exhibit space at the post-race festival.  Note that there is limited availability for some of these opportunities. The deadline to apply for a sponsorship is February 29, 2016.

Sponsor packets are available on the City’s website at www.gaithersburgmd.gov. For more information please contact Sponsorship Coordinator Jenni Opel at jopel@gaithersburgmd.gov.
