About the Twilighter...

The Rockville Rotary Twilight Runfest is one of the most popular races of the summer in the National Capital area. The event consists of the 8K race (including a wheelchair division) and a 1k fun run followed by music, refreshments, and an overall rockin' good evening. The 2010 Runfest is the 25th running of Rockville's summer night block party.

Race Beneficiary

Funds raised from the Annual Rockville Twilight Runfest go to support the Rockville Recreation Fund and the Rockville Rotary Foundation.

The City of Rockville Department of Recreation and Parks manages the Rockville Recreation fund, which allows hundreds of children and dozens of families the opportunity to participate in recreation programs that they could not otherwise afford. Residents who qualify as low income can request funding subsidy for one program per quarter, and must pay a portion of the fee out of pocket. Last year over two hundred children and families received funding to offset the cost of summer camp, sports leagues, after-school daycare, and teen programs. Families with low income were able to take classes, use the swim center and join a community center.

Each year, combined donations from organizations such as the Rockville Rotary Club, Montgomery County Road Runners, and private citizens have averaged approximately $40,000. Although the fund operated in the black throughout the 1990’s, applications for subsidies have greatly increased, depleting the fund balance. In 2008 the requests for funds was nearly double the donations collected. Through the donations and support of clubs, businesses and individuals, this program can continue.

100% of donations go directly to the scholarship recipients. There are no administrative or operating costs charged to this fund. The City of Rockville fully supports this program to ensure the highest quality programs and fair and equal access to all eligible residents. If you have any questions, please contact Betsy Thompson, Superintendent of Recreation at 240-314-8627 or by e-mail at bthompson@rockvillemd.gov.

Past recipients of the Rockville Rotary Foundation’s Runfest proceeds also include Treatment and Learning Centers for scholarships, stadium lights for Rockville Community Baseball, Crime Solvers to fund rewards, and Cub Scout Pack 492 for its fine programs.

Team Competition

The 8k race will include team competition for those runners who wish to register as teams. There will be Open and Masters team categories. All team competition will be co-ed. Teams must consist of five or more runners including at least two women and two men. Masters teams: all runners must be age 40 or older. See Team Competition for additional details and registration procedure.
