5K Walking Program

The 2010 5K Walking program begins August 17, 2010 and continues until its graduation event, the November 7, 2010, Rockville 5K race.

This program is designed for walkers who want to improve their fitness level and complete a 5K (3.1 mi) distance with ease. All shapes, sizes and skill levels are welcomed!! Training will focus on incrementally increasing participants’ endurance and speed. Interested persons who have not been active at all, and/or have reservations about their fitness level, should check with their physician before registering.

Note: There is a free, informal-drop-in walk/run offering which begins each year in April and continues until this program begins. This option takes each Tuesday at Montgomery College track in Rockville, MD, and Thursday evenings at King Farm Park from 6:00-7:00 PM. King Farm Park is located at the corner of Deer Meadow Lane and Grand Champion Drive in Rockville, MD. Ask for Lisa Daigle.

Program Schedule

Orientation - Tuesday, August 17, 2010, 6:30: PM, Montgomery College track, 51 Mannakee Street. Rockville, MD 20850 (come dressed for workout). Participants, based on orientation day pace assessment, will be placed in one of three pace groups: Fast Pace; Medium Pace; Slower Pace.

Weekly Tuesday Night Track sessions will begin at 7:00 PM, Montgomery College track. The track location will move to a local high school mid September. Workouts begin with a short seminar on various aspects of training, which include but not limited to stretching, balance, discipline and speed.

Saturday Long Walks begin August 21st, 8:00 AM King Farm Park, at the corner of Deer Meadow Lane and Grand Champion Road, Rockville, MD. Long walks may also take place at other designated locations throughout the duration of this program.

Club Membership

MCRRC membership is not required for participation in the 5K Walking program. However, if you find you like walking and/or running in group settings, participating in club races and other sport related activities, please consider joining MCRRC. It’s a friendly and supportive organization comprised of people who share common interests of walking and running.

Training Shirts and Volunteer Requirement

Technical training program shirts will be available for purchase during the first two weeks of the program. Participants are reminded that program costs are kept low due to the volunteer nature of the club. All participants are required to assist in at least one club race or event.
