The MCRRC Green Team is a newly formed group of MCRRC members with a goal to minimize the waste and carbon footprint generated by MCRRC events. See our reoccurring articles in the Rundown.

Green Team Success at Pike's Peek 10K Sunday, April 25, 2010
Green Team volunteers recycled a LOT of bottles, cups and boxes at the finish and packet pick-up, as well as collected 858 pairs of shoes our biggest drive ever!
Looking for a green race?
Check out the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary's 7th Annual 5K Run for the Animals and 1 Mile Fun Walk. MCRRC Race Management Services will be working Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary’s Run for the Animals. This race is the Metro area's only vegan and eco-friendly 5K Run for the Animals and 1-Mile Fun Walk at Wheaton Regional Park on Sunday, May 23rd at 8:30am in Wheaton Regional Park. http://poplarspring.kintera.org

Targeted Races for 2010
In 2010, the Green Team will be targeting the following races for major recycling efforts and shoe drives:
- Pikes Peek 10K
- Rockville Rotory Twilight 8K
- Going Green Track Meet
- Parks Half Marathon

- Halloween Young Run 2009
Pike's Peek Sneaker Drive Results
The Green Team collected 603 pairs of shoes for recycling and reuse through Nike Reuse-a-Shoe as well for reuse by donating to African countries through the Montgomery County Recycling Center.

How do we want to achieve our goals?
Reduce
- Encourage public transportation or carpooling for events
- Use eco-friendly printing
- Use more environmentally-friendly race premiums
- Use organic t-shirts, race bags, and foods
- Support online registration for races
- Use recycled/biodegradable cups and port-o-potty supplies
- Use clean solar power for races
- Offer carbon offsets to participants
Reuse
- Organize food waste collection for composting
- Organize running shoe donation drives
- Use permanent reusable signage for events
Recycle
- Implement on-site race recycling and waste removal for all races
- Organize clothing and shoe recycling drives

- Volunteer your time, energy, and ideas

- Use the recycle bins at the race
